Decentralization has sparked more conversation and opinions than we can track. As people become more aware of the cracks in the current financial system, solutions to the ways through and over those existing barriers become more appealing. Richard Craib is the founder of the crowdsourced quant hedge fund, Numerai, which is using sophisticated machine learning to create models that essentially predict how the stock market moves. During this conversation with Tom, Richard is sharing how crypto is breaking the barriers of the old financial system that was meant to protect people, while effectively keeping everyone out. This is another resource that can be really useful in seeing the bitcoin revolution, blockchain and cryptocurrency in another light, especially through the lens of finance.

“The difference between owning something forever, and being this kind of like sort of like slave to a system is a very different mindset.” [56:16]

“That's an incredible thing to change, to feel like your relationship with your physical world is somehow fragile, but then the relationship with the digital world is actually fixed and permanent and doesn't need police. And so that's a very powerful thing to be aware of.” [57:49]

“If you can think from first principles, you really can do something original. But if you don't, you can't.” [1:32:56]

“It's very easy to predict the future, when you have a few things to rely on.” [1:33:51]

In one of the worst times in history, people across the entire world simultaneously experienced unexpected change and loss beyond anything ever experienced in recent history. The response to such life altering events has varied drastically from person to person and country to country. Some people found opportunities where none existed before, while others sat in disbelief not sure how to move forward or what to do. Dave Hollis has gone through his own sudden changes over the last couple of years, not related to the pandemic, and they’ve been the kind of changes that challenge your identity and the core of who you say you are and who you think of yourself to be. On the other side of these unexpected life events, he’s emerged with an experience to share about what standing in fear looked like while turning what was utterly terrifying into an exhilarating experience worth sharing. Dave shares his journey of losing everything to find everything else he was capable of creating and more once he learned how to construct a new identity, a purpose, and fulfillment through courage. He reminds us in his latest book, Built Through Courage, “the antidote to fear is a plan.” Do you have a plan in place to help you deal with the unexpected changes life is throwing your way?

“It is not until we've lost everything that we can do anything” -Tyler Durden (Fight Club)

QUOTES:

“There is no control. There's only the way that we respond to the circumstances that life presents” [3:22]

“The place I had to start, to be honest, was really getting intimate with my fear. Because most of why my imagination had been lost was because there was so much fear around trying to figure out something that I'd never contemplated.” [6:50]

“I got to at least build the sail, I gotta put it up so that when the wind starts to come, I'm actually prepared to move forward.” [11:36]

“You think good things are going to come out of this, you will become something because of the post traumatic growth that can come out of the hardest thing that you've ever experienced.” [22:02]

“We're willing to stay inside of suffering that we know, rather than facing the possibility of something new, because the knowns of that existing suffering feel predictable [...] The challenge in pushing away though, is that that safe harbor is surrounded on all sides by fear.” [39:58]

“People get stuck because they let the circumstances of what's happening in real time, cast a probability future, a likely to happen next future, that is clouded by the subjectivity of what they're currently experiencing.” [49:30]

“The way that I feel about my faith is fundamentally different because of having to have my faith tested. I was forced to my knees.” [57:24]

“In the moment, when it feels like life is ending, you forget that there's so many firsts, and so many nexts and so many beautiful moments.” [1:01:17]

How did your body respond to the last carb heavy dinner you had? Does eating a high calorie meal affect you worse than a lower calorie, higher carb meal? Herman Pontzer, an evolutionary biologist, did a research study on a hunter gatherer community called Hazda in Tanzania, to learn about energy expenditure. What he’s discovered flips everything you thought you knew about calories and carbs upside down. He’s joining Tom to expose why the data shows that carbs in a calorie controlled environment do not matter. Meaning, it is possible to theoretically go on a Twinkie diet (please don’t) and still lose weight when calories are adhered to. Herman is using data to push back on how calories are burned and how they signal your brain to control your weight.

QUOTES:

“The problem is that when we begin to say, oh, that must have been something in the food that you ate, rather than, oh, it's something in your individual response to that extra energy.” [21:33]

“It really does come down to the calories or what determines the weight change or maintenance, not the carb level.” [24:13]

“The argument is, is this more in the weeds? Is it fat cells and pancreas? Or is it brain cells and sensing?” [32:29]

“It is my job to keep eyes open and look across cultures and look across human experiences and see that diversity and understand all of it is pretty normal. That the universe of normal for humans is pretty darn broad.” [33:11]

“Sugar is a fructose molecule and a glucose molecule stuck together, and when it gets into your blood, that's what it is.” [38:38]

What do athletes have that entrepreneurs and anyone looking to reach max potential can learn from? It’s their work ethic. Hardcore, unrelenting, straight up grind-this-sh*t-out work ethic that shows up and does the work Every. Single. Day. Recent numbers report approximately 8% of the American population are millionaires. What’s stopping the masses from achieving wealth and success on their own terms? You could say politics, social issues and a lot of other things, but the reality is those reasons are not stopping everyone. Jim Rohn said, “Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Don’t wish it were easier; wish you were better.” In this episode, these high level athletes share tips to help you develop a champion mindset. We know how important the work is to do, but consistency is key, and the process includes doing the right things everyday no matter what.

“What you create, creates you” Anthony Trucks, Former NFL Athlete

Tips to help you develop your champion mindset:

1. Do the right things every day, consistency is key.
2. Dream the big goal and believe you’re capable of achieving it.
3. The way you make others feel around you is important.
4. Do the hard things with intention to be prepared.
5. Push through the pain in pursuit of your goals.
6. Be average with extraordinary dreams and desire
7. Always outwork the competition.
8. Help people in their journey to fuel your own journey.
9. Sometimes you have to tap into your dark side.
10. Growth requires body, mind and spirit connection

Having a complete understanding of the financial system we’ve become accustomed to since birth is not only advantageous, but it’s an absolute must.  The gap between really understanding the impact and full gravity of inflation and living by a feeling or a suspicion is too wide to ignore. Nic Carter is an entrepreneur, investor, columnist and advisor in the Bitcoin crypto space. He’s joining Tom today to break down some principle ideas and thoughts to help you at least research what you should be doing with your money, your government issued and government backed money. What’s happening with crypto and NFTs isn’t something you can ignore or sleep through. Bitcoin has been going strong for more than a decade. You have a moral obligation to yourself and to your family to at least understand how inflation works, why increasing assets is like theft of your dollar’s value and how you can protect yourself and be part of the wealth redistribution in a way that benefits you more than harms you.

SHOW NOTES:

0:00 | Introduction to Nic Carter

1:31 | Does Bitcoin Matter?

4:21 | What is Money?

8:52 | Creating Devalued Money

14:43 | Redistribution & Inflation of Assets

54:13 | Bitcoin, Digital Gold

QUOTES:

“Devaluing the monetary medium that we store our work and labor in is always redistributive. So it's effectively a way to reapportion societal resources from some group to another group.” [9:59]

“there's a wealth effect whereby people feel richer, and then they spend more like if the value of your 401k goes a lot, goes up a lot, you're probably willing to buy that nice new car, if the value of your house goes up a lot” [16:23]

“There's nothing that guarantees that public equity investors in the US are going to earn 7% every year for the rest of all time.” [31:38]

“As an entrepreneur in the crypto space, and someone who allocates capital, my best hope is to sort of create the tools and the systems that regular folks can use to potentially escape a ruinous Fiat system.” [40:15]

“The government cultivates an environment in which the dollar has value. They have certain tools to do that, one is tax policy...” [42:09]

“The first thing is just not not accepting uncritically the narratives coming out of sort of our monetary elites in this country.” [49:06]

If you've been following the cryptocurrency and NFT conversation with us recently, you’ll appreciate this incredible conversation with Robert Breedlove, a freedom maximalist and bitcoin-focused entrepreneur. If you haven’t been following along, jump in now. This episode is less NFT and crypto wallet focused and more educational in that Robert breaks down inflation like very few can. Understanding something at its foundational level allows you to really think from first principles, which empowers you to make better decisions. Cryptocurrency is built on technology and Bitcoin has been performing like no other asset in history, but why and how is this possible? You may need to watch this a few times, and may be even better with pen and paper to take notes. This is a crash course and deep dive on money, inflation, what property is, and why assets matter.

Robert shares 5 properties of money:

1. Divisibility
2. Durability
3. Recognizability
4. Portability
5. Scarcity

QUOTES:

“Money is also a psycho technology. It's like literacy or numeracy. It's a software implementation we put into our brain, we use it to communicate, negotiate [and] plan.” [6:42]

“We typically think property is the house, the car, the stock, whatever. That's not what property is, properties and relationships. It's an exclusively acknowledged relationship between the owner and the asset”

“It contradicts the premise of self ownership, when we give power away to a single institution” [10:26]

“I like to say central banking, and the fiat currency complex is as clear as mud and twice as dirty.” [16:48]

“When we look at money, the five properties that market actors voluntarily favor, you could also think of as the five services we seek from money…” [26:16]

“When money is losing its value over time. We're all incentivized to be more short term thinking. This is a de-civilizing force.” [39:07]

“There is no difference between counterfeiting and inflating the amount of dollars in the system.” [40:13]

“Inflation is legalized counterfeiting. Counterfeiting is criminalized inflation.” [43:33]

“We have tried to rationalize and formulate different ways of creating socio economic structures that favored the few that could understand it and create that privilege for themselves at the expense of others.” [56:35]

“Bitcoin is an innovation as significant as the Gutenberg printing press actually, and I think the implications of its emergence will be similarly disruptive to institutions in the world.” [1:10:07]

“When the institution tries to clamp down on the disruptive technology, the subversive technology, it actually drives it to its highest and most useful form of some subversion” [1:12:24]

“Another definition of money. It's an insurance policy on uncertainty. The only reason people are holding money is for its option value.” [1:35:23]

“To walk across the room, implies that you value being on the other side of the room more than you value sitting where you currently are. So we are constantly and unavoidably expressing our values through action.” [1:55:22]

Sleep is not only an essential function that allows us to recharge mentally and physically, it’s also deemed so important that going without sleep was banned by Guinness World Records. The record for going without sleep was officially given to Randy Gardner who managed to survive 11 days without sleep in 1964 while giving himself a form of dementia. Obviously this is not the path to take for increasing productivity and optimizing your quality of life, but many of us are short changing our sleep every night and have been doing so for years. Sleep is something that should be protected and guarded at all costs if you want to execute consistently at a high level and optimize for higher output and results. Here are Tom’s 10 tips to help you prioritize your sleep even if you’re burning the candle at both ends, there is no excuse and no way around prioritizing your sleep hygiene.

When you sit back allow yourself to really dream, often the dream you have is beautiful but it’s also big, a little scary, and intimidating. Big dreams and big goals feel nearly impossible. It’s hard to fathom how you’re supposed to get from where you are in this moment to this far away goal that’s hard to conceptualize. James “Iron Cowboy” Lawrence completed 50 consecutive Iron-Distance Triathlons covering 7,030 miles with 0.24% of those miles completed indoors due to inclement weather. He joins Tom and breaks down the backlash he got for doing less than 17 miles indoors, and reveals the real mental fortitude and personal challenges he faced that lead him to deciding on completing 100 consecutive Iron-Distance Triathlons this time, plus one.

James talks about what it really means to do hard things, and how the secret of achieving your goals is in the journey, the failures, and the lessons that prepare you for the actual goal. He’s opening up about what his post-recovery has become and the challenges he’s overcoming for that as well.

QUOTES:

“Doing hard things with intent is preparation for the unknown.” [2:18]

“Motion creates emotion, and you have to experience something and feel it in order to have an experience or knowledge with it.” [4:00]

“Mastering that continual conversation and beatdown that we have with ourselves is one of the most important pieces to that puzzle.” [9:42]

“Why people fail is because they rush straight to that big goal and they miss out on everything in between, which is the most important part.” [14:48]

“You need to meet yourself where you're at, on your journey. And over time, your perception perspective will change about what's possible for you.” [18:20]

“You wouldn't do something if you knew how damn hard it was going to be, and you wouldn't do something if you had all the answers, and you don't start as the expert.” [34:34]

“What you say you're going to do is the expectation, and if you deviate from that, it gives them permission to then attack you.” [43:23]

“We don't know what tomorrow is gonna bring, and if you quit now you're never going to find out and that would be the most tragic thing you do on your journey…” [49:46]
