When you think of someone being courageous, it’s easy to think of police, fire fighters, and military. Maybe the person that risked their life to help a total stranger in a time of need comes to mind as being courageous. But courage manifests in many ways than not just the physical acts that we default to. Ryan Holiday joins Tom to discuss his new book, Courage Is Calling. He explains how courage is ongoing. It’s about the moments and opportunities that are presented where you choose to act in courage, or you show up reckless without regard, or you choose the cowardly thing in that moment. Ryan unpacks having courage, acting in courage, and where it falls in the spectrum between being reckless and being a coward. Even the term coward seems harsh when you realize you may be guilty of acting cowardly at different points in your life. You’ve chosen to “save face” and look after your personal safety and benefit at some point, and it’s okay, we all have. Ryan further explains through his personal experiences that doing the courageous thing is not always self-evident, and that these moments will present themselves. This is a great jumping off point to exercise your courage muscle, do the heroic things and start living to a higher standard today.

QUOTES:
“That's kind of the idea of virtues, is to create sort of a structure that you can live in, that guides you so you're not again winging it on these critical decisions.” [7:03]
“There is no deed in this life so impossible that you cannot do it, your whole life should be lived as a heroic deed.” Leo Tolstoy read by Tom [12:21]
“History is not just a parade of shitty people and crimes and awfulness and hypocrites, that we are making progress and things are getting better and it's getting better because people were courageously committed to ideas and ideals, and risked themselves and their reputations to try to make those things more real.” [22:45]
“You don't get to stick your head in the sand and deny that facts are facts, but you have to decide what facts are you going to take and integrate into your understanding of the world, and what your imperative as an individual is.” [31:28]
“What do you do with the little moments that life offers you? Do you make the brave choice Or the cowardly choice?” [34:32]
“If the fight doesn't need to happen, it's not courageous to start it [....] deciding what battles need to be fought, what risks need to be taken, how risk can be taken off the table if it's not necessary. This is an important part of courage. It's not just, I don't feel fear.” [44:49]
“The thing you're hesitating on doing, the considerations, are usually very helpful in reminding you of what actually matters.” [51:33]
“Courage isn't this thing where you're either courageous or you're not. It's more a thing you do, day to day.” [1:14:54]
“If you think about courage as like, very rarely the easy way, and almost always the harder way, you can build that as a muscle” [1:17:21]
“The decision to quit, the decision to give up, the decision to concede, that's ultimately a power that you always have.” [1:20:19]
“Everyone tells you, it's a bad idea, until you definitively prove it was a good idea. And then the curse is that it looks like it was obvious all along.” [1:25:30]

“I hope that when somebody listens to our conversation and watches this that they have a massive a-ha moment, but it’s not going to mean fucking shit if you don’t take action and do something about it.” [3:01]
“You are going to find yourself not at 25, but 45 or 65, and you're going to be so filled with regret that you never fucking put a bet on yourself.” [6:29]
“When you start to have a moment with yourself, the crazy part is you start to build a partnership with yourself.” [15:01]
“Beating yourself up will not make you do the work to get healthy, and tearing yourself down over the shit that you've done or the terrible relationships that you're in it's not going to empower you to change the patterns that are keeping you stuck.” [24:50]
“The thing about jealousy is, it's just your inspiration that's blocked. Jealousy is sort of the insecurity that you have that blocks this inspiration” [35:55]
“Most people aren't obsessed with their goals, because they don't believe they're worthy of them.” [40:36]
“If you don't, at some point, be defiant, against what the world or your caregivers or your past experience has pounded into your brain incorrectly, unfairly, you will forever be stuck with that story.” [41:16]
“You can have nothing, and you can still have your own back. You can have tremendous problems and very real obstacles that you're facing, and you can have a mindset that says, through my efforts, my attitude, I can have an impact on the situation that I'm in.” [45:09]

Dopamine is not a new topic. People have been obsessing and hearing about dopamine and its role in human behavior for years. You may think of it as the feel-good happy hormone, or you may associate it with addiction, love, lust and sex. As our lives convert over to a totally digital experience that is with us everywhere we are in the form of a cell phone, dopamine detox has even started gaining in popularity. Dr. Andrew Huberman from the Huberman Lab is back again to unpack some of the more surprising discoveries and uses of dopamine. He cleverly relates dopamine to being a biological currency that has a role to play in human desire for more. Dopamine is the catalyst pushing humanity forward exploring things like cryptocurrency and pushing our limitations and what is possible, but is all of that for the sake of pleasure and feeling good? Dr. Huberman breaks down the eternal balance of pain and pleasure, arousal and relaxation and gives you the insight you need to start regulating your body’s dopamine release. If you thought dopamine was all about feeling good, Dr. Huberman is about to reveal why it’s more about what motivates you in the pursuit of something greater.

52:42 | Using Rules & Dopamine
58:27 | Ways to Get Motivated
QUOTES:
“When I say dopamine is the universal currency of everything, what I mean is, it's driving the motivation to develop new currencies.” [3:08]
“Celebrating the win more than the pursuit, it actually sets you up for failure in the future.” [16:00]
“If you can start to register that craving, and that friction and that desire, that almost kind of low level of agitation, sometimes high level of agitation [...] that's dopamine...” [17:54]
“Your capacity to tap into dopamine as a motivator, not just seeking dopamine rewards, that is infinite.” [19:34]
“It's the craving that makes me feel alive. So it's the state of wanting that is in and of itself, the pleasurable act.” [22:37]
“It doesn't matter if it's Bitcoin or aetherium, it doesn't matter if it's putting rockets on other planets, it doesn't matter if it's building the first automobile, it's the same currency.” [25:27]
“Dopamine itself is not the reward. It's the build up to the reward, and the reward has more of a kind of opioid bliss like property,” [29:51]
“The more pain you experience, the more dopamine you can achieve. If you get back on the avenue of pursuit.” [30:58]
“I would say addiction is a progressive narrowing of the things that bring you pleasure, and I don't like to comment too much on enlightenment, [...] but a good life is a progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure, and even better is a good life is a progressive expansion of the things that bring you pleasure and includes pleasure through motivation and hard work. “ [32:55]
“If you think about most of the growth in life comes from these rigidly externally imposed schedules and we hate them. But they are where we learn restraint” [52:42]

Whether you believe that humans and other species have evolved or you believe in a creator of living things, this episode is going to excite you or challenge you to think outside the box. Both scenarios are worthwhile, as Tom is joined by the world renowned evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins. Trying to fully grasp how the human mind works and what role evolution plays with our emotions, thought processes and sexual selection can be overwhelming. Tom highlights the inspiring works from Richard and discusses some complex ideas from his latest book, Books Do Furnish A Life. This is a deep dive into what evolution is, and raises the question of whether or not science, technology, and the human search for meaning and exploration has surpassed our basic evolutionary need for survival. Where does that leave humanity and what options are potential solutions worth exploring?

QUOTES:
“What I tried to do in my writing career is to emphasize the rational, thoughtful side of the brain, and to not deny the existence of the emotional, but to try to foster the control of the emotions by reason.” [6:48]
“What the human mind achieves today, in the form of science in particular, technology, is utterly bewildering when you think about it in an evolutionary context. It is so far beyond what we're ever naturally selected to do.”
“The origin of life on this planet is not a highly implausible event, it’s not a very rare event...” [1:09:49]
“The idea that every particle in the universe has a minute mote of consciousness seems to me to be complete rubbish.” [1:39:17]
“It's got to be a manifestation of great complexity of interacting units. No, one of which is conscious in itself, but when you put them together, consciousness emerges from the interactions among them.” [1:40:47]
“Cultural evolution is a real phenomenon, it really looks like evolution, it really has the same progressive qualities as evolution does.” [1:42:39]
“I introduced the idea of the meme as a virus of the mind. Something that goes viral is this successful meme.” [1:45:56]

Some people are more motivated by bad news while others are paralyzed in fear. Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying are two Evolutionary Biologists that give you the facts, discoveries and observations as they see it. Tom reads a direct quote from their latest book that says, “We are headed for collapse. Civilization is becoming incoherent around us.” Bret and Heather break down fundamental ideas behind what humans have learned from evolution for thousands of years, how corrupt the science community has become, and how to parent your children with the goal of mitigating risks while they are younger. These biologists are incredibly fascinating with novel ideas of what adaptation would look like for humans if we are careful and intentional.

“Some things about what we are, are very difficult to change, some things are actually trivial, easily changed, and knowing which is which is a matter of sorting out where the information is housed.” Bret Weinstein [6:24]

“Let's figure out how to use language that we can all agree on and understand and know, for the purposes of communication, as opposed to for the purposes of displaying group membership.” Heather Heying [23:31]
“Teaching undergraduates means exposing yourself and the thinking that you are presenting to naive minds who will throw curveballs at you, and some of those curveballs are going to be nuisances, and maybe they'll waste your time, but some of them are likely to reveal to you the frailty in your own thinking or in the thinking of the field.” Heather Heying [26:05]
“Being courageous about actually acknowledging what you don't know, often leads to the best conversations” Bret Weinstein [26:52]
“We need science where things are sufficiently difficult to observe or counterintuitive.” Bret Weinstein [29:53]
“wherever perception is the mediator of success, you have deception as an important evolutionary force” Bret Weinstein [32:19]

Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, blockchain, and NFTs, when does it all stop and go away? Good news, chances are it never will. Bad news, chances are it’s not going away and if you’ve been avoiding this conversation, it needs to end today. Cryptocurrency is the fastest growing technology we’ve ever witnessed in human history. 10 years ago people doubted it, laughed at it, and blew it off. Today, countries like Nigeria, Vietnam and the Philippines are starting to adopt crypto. What is often rejected and feared is typically not understood. While billionaires and master investors once turned their backs to Bitcoin and the crypto world, they are slowly coming around and see the potential of what this currency and technology really is. Anthony Pompliano joins Tom to put you on notice and help you better understand exactly why low income and middle class people literally cannot afford to continue dismissing the potential for building wealth with cryptocurrency. Blockchain is happening and there is a major shift in wealth and purchasing power taking place. You owe it to yourself and to your future generations to at least do some more research, investigate and find out how you can better leverage the potential that a new digital world represents for you. The cost of entry is low, it’s decentralized, and for the first time you are not restricted by your income to take advantage.

“It's easy to mock and make fun of these young people. But these young people are interested in understanding how does the market works.” [8:03]
“It is impossible, literally impossible in America to get a financial security position by saving” [10:21]
“I can either suffer at the hands of this system, or I can flip around to the other side table, and I can benefit from the system. Every single rich person understands how to benefit from the system, hold assets, not a currency” [18:46]
“All money, at the end of the day, is a unit of time.” [31:28]
“Bitcoin, specifically, it has a financial component that is unavailable and other assets, it is systematically built to continue to protect your purchasing power” [33:02]
“The more that you can be a market observer, rather than a market predictor, you start to just understand, crazy stuff happens.” [1:07:03]

Being open minded to new science, new research and medical breakthroughs is always a bonus. Too often it’s thought that health is for the rich or privileged that can afford high quality care, but when researchers and physicians begin to share how easy and accessible better health is for everyone, it’s time to really pay attention. Dr. William Li is an internal medicine doctor from the Harvard Medical School Faculty that studies angiogenesis, and is the author of the best-selling book, Eat To Beat Disease. Dr. Li is breaking down the 5 natural body defenses protecting you at all times, even right now, and exactly how powerful foods are that can prevent disease in your body. This interview feels like part of the missing chronicles of optimizing your health to a level you never knew existed, and there’s nothing complicated about it.

Success has its price, and it will not be obtained without paying your fair share. Though success is something many people strive for, it has also been the byproduct of escape for many. Facing yourself in the mirror, the story you tell about yourself, and the heartache and trauma you’ve experienced can take the back seat in pursuit of greatness. Maybe enough success will make it all hurt less. Bobby Hall, AKA Logic, hasn’t had an easy start in life. Coming from an abusive family, exposed to too much at a young age has a role in how he arrived at throwing himself into his art and being one of the greatest rappers in hip hop. Bobby breaks down his journey, why he wrote his memoir and where he is now ending the career of Logic that he’s spent over a decade building.
Bobby’s Bio: As an author, Logic released the novel Supermarket (2019), which was accompanied by a soundtrack of the same name. The book became a New York Times Best Seller, but both works received generally mixed to negative critical reception. Logic is also a streamer, and signed exclusively with Twitch, becoming the first musician to do so.

“When I look at other people, when they tell me their dreams, and their ambitions, and all this, I see this child inside of them that is pure and excited, and I root for that person.” [43:21]
“Being happy with the person I see in the mirror. has allowed me to not let that bitterness grow” [54:47]
“It took me being physically the strongest I'd ever been, the biggest I'd ever been in my life, to realize that all of that had nothing to do with strength, and that I had been strong my whole life. And I didn't need some outward physique to show me that or prove that to anybody else.” [56:32]
“Looking in the mirror now older, I've realized, everyone's full of shit. Nobody knows what they're talking about. I don't know shit. Why am I worried about this?” [58:22]
“Taking away the words of people and the thoughts that have been implanted in my head by people about myself is probably the most freeing thing I've been working on.” [59:28]
“I soaked up every piece of information that I could, so that I could be better at what I wanted to do, and if you are not prepared to wake up every day, to kind of like, fuck your life up, you know, turn down dates and hanging out with friends and all these things. Then don't do it.” [1:06:47]
“It was worth it up into that moment. And then I had to say goodbye” [1:11:08]

QUOTES:
“Crypto as it started building out as an ecosystem, [...] is now the fastest adoption of any technology in all recorded human history.” [7:42]
“If you know that something is being adopted at this speed, and it's a network of money at its core, and you combined infinitesimal fraction of it, so everybody can buy 10% of their net worth, then everybody who takes this opportunity will probably have the biggest opportunity in history to make money.” [10:11]
“I'm screaming from the rooftops saying, you might be cynical, you might think you don't understand it. You might think you can't afford to play in this. But you have to listen, because this is the opportunity.” [14:31]
“Suddenly, NFT's come and community tokens, and your mind is completely blown that this is not just money. It's the entire exchange, transfer and storage of value for the internet. Whole business models are about to change massively, because of what this technology unlocks.” [18:50]
“Generational poverty is a mindset knowledge problem far more than it's a money problem, because they managed to pass on a likelihood of being poor.” Tom Bilyeu [25:46]
“I want people to understand that this is a game and I don't mean that in any sort of derogatory way, but it has rules. And if you understand those rules, there's always an opportunity, especially in moments of disruption.” Tom Bilyeu [27:21]
“Don't over force the narrative. Just be broad, be open and always be learning because we don't know. This is all new, and it's happening at lightning speed.” [34:31]
“You have to know that we don't know the outcome, and anybody who tells you that they know what's going to happen is just a fraud.” [37:00]
“Be paranoid, excessively paranoid, but still confident in that you're right, and you also have to accept the risk of failure.” [39:31]
“This is true kind of distributed power within wealth creation, that people only dream of. This is the system not being against you, but working for you for once.” [1:15:14]
